KANDY · SRI LANKA

Tea country, temple bells, and the long way to Ella.

The hill-country capital. Day trips into the Cultural Triangle, tea-estate walks at Nuwara Eliya, the slow train through the highlands, and the temple that gave the city its name.

Only in Kandy

Three things you can only do from here.

Day tours and cooking classes exist in every Sri Lankan town. These three don’t. The relic, the rock palace, and the railway through the tea — each one specific to Kandy and the hill country around it. Plan the rest of the trip around them.

Through the tea country

The Kandy → Ella railway

Open windows, tea-estate stations, the Nine Arches Bridge, hill-tunnels carved by British engineers in 1864. The line between Kandy and Ella is voted one of the world’s great train journeys for a reason — the same rails carry locals to school and travellers to their next hostel. Reserved seats, observation cars and the standard run all leave from Kandy station.

5th-century stonework

Sigiriya & the cave temples

A king built his palace on a 200-metre rock in 477 AD, his half-brother attacked, the place was forgotten under jungle for a thousand years. Today you climb the lion’s-paw staircase to the summit. On the way back, the painted cave temples of Dambulla. Both UNESCO. Most Kandy operators do both in one long day.

In the city

The Temple of the Tooth & the lake

The relic that gave Kandy its name lives behind the white walls of the Sri Dalada Maligawa — one of Buddha’s teeth, drawn out for puja three times a day. The lake walk that loops around it, the Bahirawakanda viewpoint above, and the cooking smells from the central market are usually all in the same morning.

Kandy’s most booked

Start with the day everyone loves.

If you’ve only got one day out of Kandy, this is the one travellers keep picking. The full hill-country day that gets the most stars in the city.

By tour type

Or pick how you want to spend the day.

By tuk-tuk if you want the city loop. By train if you want the postcard. On foot if you want the Knuckles. In a kitchen if you want to take the curry home. Plus elephants, tea factories, the climb up Ambuluwawa — and the long way down to Ella.

The ancient cities

If it’s the rock palaces you came for.

Sigiriya’s 1,500-year-old summit, Dambulla’s painted caves and a touch of Polonnaruwa — Sri Lanka’s UNESCO ancient-cities loop, all reachable on a long day out from Kandy. If we had to pick three operators, these are the ones we’d book.

Up into the tea

The hill-country day trip.

Nuwara Eliya’s tea factories, Ella’s Nine-Arches Bridge, the Hindu temples and waterfalls in between. Sri Lanka’s highlands all sit within a day-return from Kandy. Our pick for the run up the hill.

In the kitchen

Where the curry comes from.

Coconut sambol, kiribath rice, four kinds of curry and a chat with the cook. Kandy is Sri Lanka’s unofficial cooking-class capital — three afternoons we’d send our friends to.
